The United States Constitution's first 10 amendments are the known as the "Bill of Rights".
James Madison, our 4th president, is often credited with writing the Bill of Rights in response to growing worry over possible loss of rights by the government. Some historians, however, give credit to George Mason as the true father of the Bill of Rights, who based his thoughts and language on the English bill of rights from 1689.
Either way, our Bill of Rights is the very foundation of our country and is meant to protect individuals from tyrannical government. |
